In April 2014, the art group ‘Surreal Vintage’ (a collection of artists with a shared interest in the principles of Surrealism and the satellite artistic/pop culture movements DADA and Punk had their first exhibition at Gallery 286 in Earls Court, London. The aim of the exhibition was to promote and celebrate the selected artists and to launch the Surreal Vintage online shop, website and magazine.
Visitors to Gallery 286, owned and run by Jonathan Ross, were treated to two gallery floors of selected artworks that included: small-scale paintings inspired by dream imagery and adventures in the subconscious, ‘Seaside Surreal’ paintings, Surreal Talking Robot iPad tables, 3D and animated lenticular prints, sculpted ear plates, editioned prints from all the artists, large ceramic head sculptures, the ‘Dada Bumper Car’ and ‘Egg & Legg’ jewellery.
Guests and visitors were also invited to join the artists for two evenings of eccentric delight that included: tasting Mad Jack’s smoked coffee eyeballs, purchasing signed limited edition artworks from the Art Vendor machine, being photographed in ‘The Chair’ – a Surreal Victorian-style photo booth that streamed live portraits onto the Surreal Vintage Facebook page, and a Surreal performance by Apple Tart.
